How to Volunteer

Thinking about Volunteering Abroad? Here’s what you should consider.

  1. Is travelling and working abroad right for me?
  2. What length of time am I able to commit volunteering abroad?
  3. Is volunteering abroad financially feasible. Is sponsoring a project or a student more realistic for me?
  4. What type of NGO am I interested in giving my time to?
  5. Are there particular projects I would like to bring to Kenya?
  6. What type of accommodations do I expect? Home-stay or hotel.
  7. Am I aware of the culture-shock I may experience and the reverse culture-shock?

Things that are beneficial for a volunteer candidate.

As much as we love interest from international volunteers, we must make sure that the volunteers who come to live and work with us are a good fit for our Kenyan Partners in order to maintain safe and healthy environments and relationships.

What we look for:

Volunteering in groups between 2-8 people helps us keep our costs low and quality high.

Of course larger and smaller groups can be accommodated, however, other measures may be needed in order to keep large groups together, such as using local hotels.

Volunteers who can stay between 1-3 months are preferable, as this allows time for integrated community engagement as well as project fruition.

Volunteers are also encouraged to take time to travel in order see all of the wonderful things Kenya has to offer. In-country Coordinators may also be hired as a guide for trips or to connect volunteers to other reputable tour organizations.

Please include a letter of intent for your proposed time spent volunteering in Kenya, including when and how long you intend to volunteer for and the number of people in your group.

Project proposal’s must also included if you wish to implement a specific project or a lesson plan with a Kenyan partner organization.

Volunteer Applications must include:

  • Applicant’s first and last name
  • Mailing address
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
  • When you would like to arrive and begin volunteering
  • The Town or County of choice. Options include volunteering in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Machakos
